About Millie Davies
Millie Davies is a Somerset-based artist who graduated from Fine Art at Goldsmiths in 2017, working primarily with oil paint to create abstract works that explore connection, communication, and the internal landscape of experience.
Her paintings are built through layers of oil paint, underpainting, blending and expressive mark-making. She often works into the surface with oil sticks and etched lines, allowing earlier layers to re-emerge through the final image.
The Process & Palette
Her work has become increasingly intuitive over the past decade. While her earlier paintings drew more directly from abstracted landscapes, using the blues and greens of sky and earth, her current palette is more inward-looking. Rich, vivid colours become less representational and more instinctive: colours of memory, feeling and the imagination.
Exploration of Connection
Connection is a recurring concern within Davies’ practice. Marks may meet, interrupt one another or remain deliberately disconnected; colours can blend, resist or sit alongside one another. These relationships become a way of considering miscommunication, individuality and the ways in which we understand ourselves and one another without relying on language.
Her paintings are increasingly concerned with an internal sense of home: the place we return to within ourselves when everything external falls away.
Art as Communication
Her training and practice as an art psychotherapist have further deepened her interest in art as communication. She considers the artwork a meeting point between inner and outer worlds - a place where something can be expressed, explored or encountered beyond the limits of words. This has informed her sensitivity to the uniqueness of individual experience and to the different ways people find meaning and connection.
Ultimately, Davies’ work asks the viewer to trust their own response. In a life in which it can be easy to feel lost, her paintings explore the possibility that something within us already knows the way.
